Co-Treatment and Diagnosis

Diagnosis and treatment planning for patients with temporomandibular dysfunction in a clinical setting

As a dentist, you are likely to see every day in practice patients who have some degree of temporomandibular dysfunction. Tooth breakages, wear, drifting of teeth and relapse of tooth alignment all can threaten the success and longevity of your treatments.

  • Are you able to put your knowledge into practice and confidently identify, diagnose and formulate a realistic treatment plan for those patients?
  • Can you identify the patients where continuing problems are likely to occur?

Often the main difficulty is in presenting the information to the patient and encouraging them to consider treatment to address the causes of their problems. This course is designed to help each delegate understand and confidently identify the underlying functional problems in order to provide effective and reliable treatments for patients, then to communicate these treatments effectively to the patient.

These courses give each delegate the opportunity to diagnose and complete the clinical records for one patient using biometric tools for objective recording, as well as observing several consultations. Delegates may bring a patient of their own or attend for a diagnosis of their own function. Treatment plans will be drawn up for all the patients, the presentation of these plans will be considered, and advice will be given on fee-structuring and delivery of treatment.

The courses are led by Helen Harrison, together with her team at the Granta Dental practice in Cambridge. Helen has a wealth of experience treating TMD patients of all ages. Her caseload is now 90% temporomandibular therapy utilising biometric records, splints, orthopaedic appliances, orthodontics and restorative treatments. She has also developed a particular expertise in explaining the issues to patients in a way that fully involves them in their treatment plan.

The day includes:

  • Full patient consultation with Dr Harrison with opportunity to observe and interact
  • Comprehensive suite of diagnostic tests completed on the day
  • Observation of further cases
  • Peer review of a  minimum of 3 other live cases
  • Review of results and identification of treatment plan for patient

The co-treatment fee of up to £845 covers the patient cost (including all diagnostics) which will be recoverable from the patient.  The actual fee will reflect the range of tests completed (if the patient already has recent diagnostic records these should be submitted in advance and will reduce the consultation fee). The cost for the 7.5 hour seminar day to include 4 case studies, peer review and treatment plans is £325.
