Photo-activated (laser) disinfection

This simple procedure uses a non-toxic liquid dye to stain any bacteria in your mouth, then a diode laser light is applied to kill the stained organisms. The treatment has these advantages:
- The procedure is painless, without heat, vibration or discomfort.
- We remove less tooth material, so if fillings are needed they can be smaller, leaving stronger, healthier teeth.
- Smaller fillings mean less drilling, so you may not need anaesthetic.
- The removal of bacteria is more effective, so fillings and crowns will last longer and it's less likely that decay will re-occur.
- If infection is removed from a deep filling with laser disinfection, you may not need root canal treatment.
- If you do need root canal treatment, the removal of bacteria beforehand can make that treatment more effective and more comfortable.
- The treatment restores the balance of bacteria and, if followed up by the use of special mouthwashes, toothpastes and gels, can remove the root cause of cavities and strengthen the enamel on the treated tooth.
- Using the procedure with children may mean that first teeth can be kept until they're shed naturally, and that there's less risk to the developing second tooth so the child may not need to take antibiotics.
