Fissure sealants

What are fissure sealants?

Fissure sealants are a safe and effective way of protecting teeth at the back of the mouth which have deep crevices and are therefore vulnerable to decay.

Why do we use them?

In some people, the grooves on the surfaces of the molar and premolar teeth are too narrow and deep to clean with a toothbrush, and ‘plaque stagnation’ in pits and fissures can lead to dental decay.  Sealants can be used in two ways: to smooth off the surface of the tooth, making it easier to keep clean (particularly useful in children and adolescents); and as a less-invasive alternative to a filling if early-stage caries is detected.

What is involved?

The process is usually quick and straightforward, taking only a few minutes per tooth.  The tooth is thoroughly cleaned and prepared with a special solution. The sealant is then applied and allowed to set hard, usually by shining an ultra-violet light onto it.

Is any follow-up required?

Once the sealant has been placed, your dentist or therapist will check them regularly to make sure the seal remains intact, as sealants can wear down over a period of time.  They will also advise on a good oral hygiene regime to maintain strong healthy teeth.
