Tooth whitening

Over time, your teeth can become stained or discoloured. Intrinsic discolouration means that the whole structure of the tooth becomes darkened through damage, ageing, staining from fillings, or because you've taken medication such as antibiotics. This sort of discolouration is difficult to remove because it's embedded in the tooth; veneers can be an option here.

Surface discolouration happens when you eat, drink or smoke - also, some toothpastes and mouthwashes that are designed to protect teeth actually increase the staining. These stains are easier to remove, although be aware that if you do have your teeth whitened, your existing fillings, crowns, bridges and veneers may then seem darker and need replacing.

At Granta Dental we offer three tooth whitening procedures.

  • The Quick Option: laser power whitening will give you instant results in just a single hour-long visit. You may need repeat procedures for the improvement to last.
  • The At Home Option: you use a pleasant tasting gel on your teeth at night for two to four weeks. You control the degree of whitening and can top up or maintain the improvement yourself.
  • The Combined Surgery-Home Option: you use a gel for two to four weeks to condition your teeth, then come to the surgery for laser treatment on the most serious discoloration. You can then use the gel at home to maintain the improvement.

How white can I expect my teeth to be?

Trying to get a brilliant white effect will look unnatural. We recommend you aim for your teeth being as white as the white part of your eyes. Also, don't expect all your teeth to be equally white - your sharp pointed teeth (canines and lower incisors) will always seem slightly darker, and all your teeth will naturally be slightly darker towards the gum line.

Are there any bad effects?

You may get some minor gum irritation or increased tooth sensitivity, but that usually settles down quickly - you can help by using special toothpastes or mouthwashes.

How can I make sure my teeth stay white?

We can monitor the whiteness of your teeth with our specialist shade guides when you come to the surgery for a checkup. If staining does happen, you can repeat the procedures as before; laser whitening can be repeated every two years, and home whitening can be topped up for one night every two or three months. Of course, it'll also help to avoid staining foods and drinks, and to stop smoking.
